1./ Kompanie Großdeutschland is part of the NWW2A. Because of this we organise our rank structure based on the Association's recommendations. All the NWW2A affiliated German Units aim to have a similar system, thus ensuring no unit will be top heavy with NCO's. At present we have 10 members, which allows us only to have one senior NCO who is responsible for the day to day running and training of 1./ Kompanie. When we get more members, the rank structure will be reviewed, so there will be plenty of opportunities for responsibility and promotion in the future - if you want it!!
The senior NCO's and the CO's position are re-elected positions are proposed and voted in by 1./ Kompanie members every December. All members of the Kompanie can place their names forward to be elected as a senior NCO or the CO.

If the specialism requires a rank then the minimum rank required for accurate portrayal is the one that should be worn initially. Attempts should be made to help the rank fit with the 1 GD' s existing Ranks & Awards structure. At Some Non Northern World War Two Association events the group may choose to put on an eastern front battle-group portrayal giving members the opportunity to use non Großdeutschland impressions if they wish. |

In the last years of World War II Stabsgefreiter were often used as group leaders Gruppenführer due to a lack of Unteroffiziere (NCOs). Promotions to this rank were suspended in 1934, although existing Stabsgefreiter retained it; promotions resumed in 1942. Awarded if elected a NWW2A board member or Association armourer etc and kept for the duration of the tenure Junior NCOs (Unteroffiziere ohne Portepee) Unteroffizier Elected Position for specialist duties within the unit at discretion of Unit CO Unterfeldweble Elected Positon for specialist duties within the unit at discretion of Unit CO Senior NCOs (Unteroffiziere mit Portepee) Feldweble Elected Position held by 1 GD unit 2IC Oberfeldweble Elected Position held by 1 GD unit CO Hauptfeldwebel or Hauptwachtmeister Hauptfeldwebel was not a rank but an appointment: the administrative and mustering NCO of a company and the commander's logistical assistant. He was therefore roughly analogous to a Company Sergeant-Major or First Sergeant, although his duties did not usually involve combat leadership. Der Spieß ordie Kompanie-Mutter, as he was called, was not necessarily the ranking Unteroffizier in the company, especially since typically two of the platoons were commanded by senior NCOs rather than officers. A Hauptfeldwebel however had to be of Portepee grade; a junior NCO filling the role was a Hauptfeldwebeldiensttuer, "one doing Hauptfeldwebelduties." The insignia for a Hauptfeldwebel was a pair of NCO Tressen encircling each lower sleeve, nicknamed "piston rings;" he also carried a leather Meldetasche or report-case tucked into his tunic front. Elected Position with the group which can be held by Junior/Senior NCO at the recommendation of Unit CO (with the units agreement) for a member of exceptional and outstanding help to Unit CO with behind the scenes, day to day running of the company. |
